Privacy Mode

Your voice, your rules. When Privacy Mode is on, nothing is ever stored.

🔒

How It Works

When Privacy Mode is enabled:

  • Your speech is streamed to our transcription engine in real-time
  • Text appears at your cursor (or in Listen mode captions) immediately
  • Once delivered, the audio and text are discarded permanently
  • No transcript is saved — not on your device, not on our servers
  • No recording is kept — audio is never written to disk

What Gets Stored (and What Doesn't)

Data Privacy Off Privacy On
Audio recording Never stored Never stored
Transcript text Saved locally Not saved
Listen mode history Saved locally Not saved
Usage minutes Tracked for quota Tracked for quota
Account info Stored Stored

Audio is never stored, even with Privacy Mode off

VoxInk never saves audio recordings to disk or to the cloud. Audio is streamed in real-time to the transcription engine and discarded. Privacy Mode controls whether the resulting text is saved, not the audio.

How to Toggle

Click the VoxInk icon in your menu bar. You'll see:

🔒 Privacy: Off — click to turn on
🔒 Privacy: On — click to turn off

The setting takes effect immediately and persists across app restarts.

When to Use Privacy Mode

  • Sensitive conversations — legal, medical, financial discussions
  • Confidential meetings — when you need real-time captions but can't keep a record
  • Shared computers — when you don't want transcripts left on the device
  • Compliance requirements — when your organization prohibits storing conversation data

Technical Details

VoxInk uses Soniox for speech-to-text and Google Gemini for AI polish and translation. Audio is streamed via encrypted WebSocket (TLS 1.3) and processed in real-time. Neither Soniox nor Google retains audio data after processing.

The VoxInk backend (Cloudflare Workers) acts as a proxy and does not store audio or transcript data. Usage statistics (minutes consumed) are stored for quota management only.
